MegaRAC Solutions for RSD offer a number of advantages for OxM customers
OxMs can integrate RSD functionality within the BMC or other Management Controller firmware on participating RSD hardware. Now, OxMs can build RSD solutions with already existing BMC development skills and infrastructure. Integrating RSD functions on BMC firmware ensures a quick path to production, without significant changes to the manufacturing process.
The MegaRAC RSD solutions framework is designed to work across a variety of existing server hardware including compute nodes, storage nodes and switches. It is also completely configurable to meet the needs of OxMs - right out of the box. This gives OxMs the ability to create their own custom proprietary solutions through their IP, on hardware they control.
MegaRAC solutions are one hundred percent out-of-band, eliminating the need for running required RSD software components on dedicated server nodes. This out-of-band aproach has intrinsic benefits, by freeing up the server node for doing more compute jobs, since processing power is not needed for running RSD tasks, as well as eliminating a potential single point of failure.
MegaRAC solutions are distributed BMC-based solutions on server nodes in a rack - as opposed to running on a dedicated node within a rack. This distributed approach eliminates a "single point of failure" threat when a crash on a dedicated node causes the entire rack to lose Rack Scale capability. A BMC-based approach also reduces the need for a failover plan, keeps CAPEX low and reduces productivity losses when compute nodes are removed from the main pool due to failure.
Being integrated into the existing on-board firmware and a part of the Life Cycle Management plans of a datacenter enable MegaRAC RSD solutions to help lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) significantly. With an integrated approach, there is no need for dedicated servers running RSD software, failover strategies for those servers running RSD management software or for the extra power and cooling required for these servers - just a few of the key TCO-sensitive concerns.
Now OxMs can build racks with flexible server (compute, storage and switch) designs that comply with all industry standards - without asking for any hardware change. Server hardware with manageability founded on the MegaRAC firmware stack is compliant with key industry standards like OCP (Open Compute Project), Scorpio and many OEM-proprietary rack solutions. Most importantly, Rack Scale features can complement all of these standards - immediately, right out of the box.
